I’m a UK based business writer and editor with 40 years of experience and a range of skills suited to digital and print publications.
My main focus is on digital technology in public services, healthcare and business, but I’ve also written about public service and business in a broader context.
My prime commitment these days is as managing editor of UKAuthority, leading in the provision of news and analysis for the website of the same name. It covers the full range of technical, policy and governance issues around the use of digital in public services, focusing on areas such as data management, cyber resilience and the development of smart places.
I also work closely with clients, developing their messages through op ed pieces, white papers, social media and support for events targeted on the public sector market.
As a freelance, I’ve written for print and digital publications, including Director, CIO UK, FT Connected Business, Computer Weekly, Government Computing and Guardian Professional Networks. My interest is in writing for business people and public officials, demystifying technology and examining the issues around its application, such as data management and computer science.
For several years I was editor of Government Computing magazine, first as part of public sector IT specialist Kable then under the ownership of The Guardian, and managing editor of the accompanying online news services. I also had a stint as editor of TechRadar.Pro, I’ve worked closely with BCS The Chartered Institute for IT, and past positions have included writing and editing roles at Dow Jones and Nexus Media.
My experience extends to research, long form writing and working with analysts on market intelligence reports. This has included white papers for the BCS, Kable and Ctrl-Shift.
Copywriting
I’ve worked with communications teams and PR agencies, producing case studies, thought leadership articles and white papers, and conducting video interviews. Clients have included BCS, Vodafone, HP, Burson Marstellar, ITPR, BaseOne, Mantis PR, Claremont PR and Sideshow Agency.
I’m a skilled editor, having spent years ensuring the accuracy and fluency of copy from a wide range of sources, including writers for whom English is not their native language. I know how to shape copy to maximise its effect, with punchy headlines, sharp introductions and an understanding of search engine optimisation.
In addition, I’ve moderated a range of events, including conferences for Kable and Whitehall Media and round tables for The Guardian, along with providing input into the speaking programmes. I also have experience in interviewing and providing analysis on camera in projects for BaseOne and Dow Jones.
